Damages on a piece of artwork during the packing for transportation

The context

A piece of artwork was damaged after the cover of the case fell on it.

GM Consultant action

During loss adjustment operations, it appeared that the wood cover of the case had been placed partially on a reclined support, during the phase of the case packaging of the work and in the close proximity. Because of the drop angle, the impact with the object was inevitable and the agent was handling it with his two hands. The loss adjuster noticed a depression on the side of the pictorial layer of the artwork, with material waste, accompanied by a tear of the canvas horizontally and vertically. Despite considerable damages, a restoration  seemed possible. This was actually carried out thanks to a restorer authorized for museums.
