A cloud of trouble, or how to repaint someone else’s yacht

In April 2018, a 120-metre barge was grounded for renovation in a shipyard on the coast. During the dry-dock work (hull cleaning, application of special paints, etc.) by a contractor, an overspray formed above the vessel. The mistral wind blew this fog onto a 58-metre sailing yacht that had just been painted white.

A GM Consultant loss adjuster familiar with the yachting world was appointed by the insurers of the painting service provider involved and analysed the extent of the damage, examining the remedial solutions proposed by the companies. Thanks to a highly responsive three-party organisation (GM Consultant, the shipyard and the painting service provider), an effective and economically viable technical solution ensured that the owners of the yacht did not miss their first rental scheduled for the end of May.
